Behind the Mac: Skywalker Sound Explores a Legacy of Sound Design

Without R2-D2’s beeps, the elegant hum of a lightsaber, and Grogu’s adorable coos, Star Wars wouldn’t be Star Wars — and it’s all thanks to Skywalker Sound. This Star Wars Day, Lucasfilm and Apple are celebrating that legacy and beyond.

Behind the Mac: Skywalker Sound, a new documentary short film from Apple (co-produced by Imagine Entertainment and Delirio Films), shines a light on the legendary studio that turned sound design into an art form, creating sounds for the Star Wars saga and near-countless other films for over 40 years. Behind the Mac: Skywalker Sound takes viewers inside Skywalker Sound at Skywalker Ranch in Nicasio, California, featuring sound designers, foley artists, and mixers as they discuss their techniques and reveal how many iconic film and TV sounds came to be. The documentary is available on Apple.com and you can also watch it below.

Behind the Panels of Marvel’s Star Wars: Obi-Wan #1 – Exclusive

While Luke Skywalker initially bristled at the idea of joining Obi-Wan Kenobi on an adventure, artist Ario Anindito didn’t hesitate. The penciller of the first issue of Marvel’s new Star Wars: Obi-Wan miniseries, which kicks off today in celebration of May the 4th, Anindito replied with an instant yes when asked to join the project. “Obi-Wan is one of my favorite Jedi,” he tells StarWars.com, “so when [Marvel editor] Mark Paniccia offered me the chance to do this, I got on board very quickly!”

The series finds Obi-Wan in his later years on Tatooine, as the legendary Jedi Master hides from the Empire and watches over Luke Skywalker from afar. In each issue, Obi-Wan chronicles earlier adventures in his journals, offering a look at the Star Wars icon throughout his life.

May the 4th Be With You: A Cultural History

Like anything that emerges from the collective passion of a group of people, the Star Wars fan holiday on May the 4th each year has no single point of origin. It has no official commencement year, no formal dedication. It is a grassroots phenomenon that now transcends the English language pun that inspired it. Around the world, “May the 4th Be With You” is more ubiquitously known as “Star Wars Day.”

The earliest uses of the phrase “May the 4th Be With You” that we have evidence for date from 1978, one year after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope. By then, Star Wars was firmly established within American popular culture and became “like a handshake,” as Professor Leo Braudy would later comment in the documentary, Empire of

From the Pages of Star Wars Insider: The Soul Sketchbook of Iain McCaig

Concept artist Iain McCaig’s fertile imagination was once deemed too scary for George Lucas. McCaig, whose career includes accolades as a storyteller and filmmaker, was hired on by Lucasfilm in the late 1990s. Part of the esteemed art department shaping the design of the prequel trilogy, McCaig mined his deepest fears and scariest nightmares to come up with ideas for the beastly Darth Maul.

In an exclusive excerpt from Star Wars Insider #210, writer Brandon Wainerdi sits down with McCaig to learn about what inspired the artist on the road to creating “Space Nouveau” and why he went back to the drawing board after his first attempt at designing Maul.

Star Wars Insider: What were your earliest childhood inspirations?

Iain McCaig: My family were all storytellers, full of tales and never-ending
