5 Reasons You Should Try the Star Wars: The High Republic Middle Grade Novels

As part of the Star Wars publishing editorial team, I’m extremely proud of what has been accomplished thus far with the Star Wars: The High Republic series, across all formats, from adult novels to all-ages comic books. But I get the sense that there are some readers who haven’t sampled our books from Disney Lucasfilm Press aimed at a middle grade audience (a target age range of 8-12 years, give or take), and with today’s arrival of Justina Ireland’s Star Wars: The High Republic: Mission to Disaster, I’d like to take the opportunity to share what I love about the High Republic middle grade novels, and why you should give them a try.

1. Two words: Vernestra Rwoh.

Vernestra Rwoh is one of the greatest Jedi in the High Republic,

Star Wars Inside Intel: Quinlan Vos

Star Wars Inside Intel is a StarWars.com feature where Lucasfilm’s Emily Shkoukani, whose job is to know as much about a galaxy far, far away as possible, explores obscure facts about Star Wars lore and continuity. In this installment, Emily takes a look at the maverick Jedi, Quinlan Vos…

Making his debut as a background character on the streets of Mos Espa in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Quinlan Vos’ story developed in Expanded Universe comics — where an affinity among fans quickly grew for the character. Recognizing the character’s popularity in Dark Horse’s Star Wars: Republic comic series, George Lucas intended to bring Quinlan in for the final episode of the prequels. Although the scene ultimately never made it into the film, he does return in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and is a

10 Things We Loved About Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

Inside the engineering room of the Halcyon starcruiser, things are getting dire. The First Order is closing in, and the newest members of the Resistance must work together to keep the ship from slipping under the regime’s control. Suddenly, amid the chaos, the towering form of Chewbacca the Wookiee emerges in the bowels of the ship. The Resistance hero is here to help, but for a moment everything else falls away — the First Order threat and the puzzles and switches before me — and I am 12 years old again.

Chewbacca and R2-D2 were the first Star Wars action figures I had as a child, so my affinity runs deep. But as the Wookiee tries to help me solve the complicated system of lights and switches needed to bring

Star Wars Insider to Celebrate 20th Anniversary of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones with “Galactic Tales”

The second installment of the prequel trilogy turns 20 this year, and Star Wars Insider is hosting something of a class reunion.

Kicking off with issue 209, which hits US newsstands on March 15, Star Wars Insider will mark the milestone 20th anniversary of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones with “Galactic Tales”: four original works of short fiction featuring some of the film’s most memorable heroes and villains.

“It’s always great whenever there’s an opportunity to celebrate the saga through original fiction, and the rich, fertile storytelling ground provided during the time of Attack of the Clones is some of the most robust in any era of Star Wars,” Brett Rector, senior editor of Lucasfilm Publishing, tells StarWars.com. “And to engage our audience, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate

Kiersten White on Telling a Tale of Young Obi-Wan in Star Wars: Padawan

Teenage years can be tough for everyone. Even Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Kiersten White’s upcoming Star Wars: Padawan follows the legendary hero when he was still very much a student, insecure about who he is and the Jedi he might become. Obi-Wan grows antsy under his master — Qui-Gon Jinn, who preaches patience and mediation — and yearns for some Jedi action. But when it looks like they’ll finally head out on a mission together, Jinn is a no-show; Obi-Wan goes off on his own instead, visiting a new world where he encounters free-spirited teens, possibly strong with the Force, who offer him a glimpse at a life that could have been. Or could still be. Yet, as Obi-Wan himself would later say, “Something is out of place.”

While Padawan doesn’t arrive

“Point of View Expands Cinema”: A Conversation with Rick Famuyiwa for Black History Month

Director Rick Famuyiwa is no stranger to storytelling. Bursting onto the scene with his first feature film The Wood in 2000, Famuyiwa has become a fixture in the galaxy far far away with his contributions to The Mandalorian, directing three episodes of the Disney+ series: “Chapter 2: The Child,” “Chapter 6: The Prisoner,” and “Chapter 15: The Believer.”

In a wide-ranging interview with StarWars.com in celebration of Black History Month, Famuyiwa expounds on his background, his filmmaking origin story, and how his experiences as an African-American child of Nigerian immigrants influences his point of view as a storyteller.

StarWars.com: Where did you grow up and what was your childhood like?

Rick Famuyiwa: I was born in Berkeley, so born in the Bay Area and sort of spent the first eight, nine
