SWCA 2022: 6 Highlights from the Star Wars: Visions Panel

Lucasfilm brought some surprises to Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022, as they revisited the making of Star Wars: Visions. The nine-episode Star Wars anime anthology series on Disney+ took the galaxy far, far away to a whole new place in 2021.

The team was brought together to talk about the experience in the “A Look Back at Star Wars: Visions” panel. Host Chastity Vicencio chatted with Lucasfilm’s James Waugh, Josh Rimes, Jacqui Lopez, and Quibic Pictures’ Justin Leach about the origins of the project and what’s in store in the future. On Saturday at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022, executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni invited fans for a sneak peek at what’s the come in The Mandalorian Season 3 and Ahsoka, which began production earlier this month. In an unexpected reveal, the filmmakers introduced live-action Sabine Wren, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, and the first footage from the forthcoming series, as well as panelists Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka Tano) and Chopper.

It’s been 35 years since Captain Rex first attempted to fly a Starspeeder 3000 to the forest moon of Endor, and this week creatives from both Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) gathered at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022 to discuss the ongoing legacy of the beloved Disney Parks attraction, Star Tours.

After an introduction from Mark Vargo, head of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, host Ashley Eckstein first welcomed those involved in the original version of the attraction, including Imagineer and Disney Legend Tony Baxter, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) visual effects supervisor Dennis Muren, and Imagineer Chris Runco. Fans finally got to enter the colorful, action-packed world of Star Wars: Hunters — the upcoming multiplayer arena-combat game — at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022. The Hunters booth, large-scale and decorated with the game’s quirky characters, featured stations for fans to play it ahead of release, and a panel with Lucasfilm Games and developer Zynga provided some insights into the title’s making. From a towering General Grievous to kid-sized members of the Bad Batch, cosplayers of all shapes and sizes wowed the crowd at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022. They came from around the world, including Brazil, Peru, the United States, and more, to show off months of hard work to an energetic audience. Judges Steve Sansweet of Rancho Obi-Wan, Krystina Arielle of Star Wars: The High Republic Show, and Kristin Baver of This Week! in Star Wars had the difficult task of selecting the winners.

“I’ve never seen a better group of costumes than I’ve just seen now [backstage],” Sansweet said as the competition kicked off.

“Two paths and two choices.” Those are the words Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni used to describe Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, a new 6-part animated short series set to premiere this fall on Disney+. Here are five things we learned in a panel that offered the first known details about the upcoming show.

1. Tales of the Jedi will see the return of familiar faces. So who will we follow on these “two paths”? None other than Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku, but like we’ve never seen them before. Fans were treated to stills and concept art from the new series featuring both of these iconic characters in three distinct eras of their lives (each will receive three episodes). Fans also caught a glimpse of a young Count Dooku.

And soon, readers can explore a new chapter in the Jedi Master’s journey with the Marvel Star Wars: Yoda miniseries. Just announced at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, the new comic is set in the moments before Luke Skywalker’s arrival on Dagobah in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, as the Jedi reflects on his life and his regrets.

Told in three arcs by three writers — Cavan Scott, Jody Houser, and Marc Guggenheim — the series will hurtle back in time to take readers to key moments in Yoda’s life during the prequel era and with a first story set in The High Republic, as he ruminates on the past. With covers from Phil Noto, artists Nico Leon, Luke Ross, and Alessandro Miracolo will illustrate the 10-issue run.
